Which Fusion Paint Is Right for You?

Which Fusion Paint Is Right for You? A Soleil & Sage Guide

A real-world breakdown of Fusion Mineral Paint, Milk Paint, and Alchemy—

If you’ve ever stood in front of the paint shelf and thought, “Wait, what’s the difference between all of these?”—you’re not alone. I get this question in the shop all the time: "Which Fusion paint should I use?" And honestly, it’s a great question. Fusion offers three gorgeous lines of furniture paint, each with its own look, feel, and vibe. Here’s how I explain it to customers—and how I decide what to use in my own projects.

Fusion Mineral Paint: The Smooth Operator

This is the paint that started it all for me. Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat, a self-leveling formula, and a low-sheen finish that’s perfect for a classic, smooth look. It’s my go-to for kitchen cabinets, dressers, and anything that gets touched daily.

Why I love it:

  • No topcoat needed (unless you want to add extra durability)
  • Goes on smooth with minimal brush marks
  • Huge range of colors—modern, moody, vintage… it’s all here

Best for: High-use furniture, cabinetry, pieces that need long-term durability

Alchemy by Fusion: The Matte Makeover Artist

Alchemy by Fusion is the newest addition (launching April 26th) and is perfect for when you want a chalk-style, ultra-matte finish. It doesn’t have a built-in topcoat, which means you can control the final look with wax, Tough Coat, or SFO depending on your needs.

Why I love it:

  • Great for layering and distressing
  • Modern matte look without the typical chalk paint mess
  • Pairs beautifully with textured or carved surfaces

Best for: Statement pieces, accent furniture, or anything you want to feel soft and sculptural

Milk Paint by Fusion: The Natural Storyteller

Milk Paint has been part of the Fusion family for over 35 years, but it’s new to Soleil & Sage—and it has totally won me over. It comes in a powder form, just add water - and gives a textured, layered, vintage-inspired finish that soaks into raw wood beautifully.

Why I love it:

  • Perfect for raw wood or lightly sanded pieces
  • Creates that "chippy," worn-in look with minimal effort
  • Eco-friendly, low VOC, and super lightweight to apply

Best for: Farmhouse, boho, or antique-inspired pieces with lots of character
