3 Mistakes I Made Early On

3 Mistakes I Made (and Learned From) When Trying a New Paint Line

Honest lessons from Soleil & Sage—because even pros learn through trial and error

We all make mistakes, especially when trying something new. Over the years of working with Fusion paint—I've learned some valuable lessons the hard way. Today, I’m sharing three mistakes I've personally made, and the easy solutions to avoid repeating them in your projects.

1. Not Using a Bonding Agent on Slick Surfaces

One of my biggest "aha" moments happened early when I first started working with Fusion Mineral Paint. Excited to refinish a sleek, laminate dresser, I jumped right in—cleaned quickly and painted directly onto the glossy surface. It looked amazing at first, but soon began to peel. The paint hadn’t properly bonded because the surface was too slick.

What I Learned: Always prep with Fusion’s TSP Alternative first, followed by a coat of Ultra Grip. Ultra Grip creates a secure bond on tricky surfaces, allowing the paint to adhere beautifully. It's a simple step that ensures lasting results. Keep in mind this step is only needed when working on high shine pieces, example would be furniture from Ikea.

2. Choosing the Wrong Brush for the Job

Another mistake was grabbing just any brush from my workshop drawer. When I first used Fusion's Mineral Paint—I didn't realize how much of a difference the type of brush could change the results. Instead of that beautiful matte finish that Mineral paint by Fusion guarantees, I ended up with visible brush strokes.

What I Learned: Now, I choose brushes designed specifically for the type of paint and finish I’m working with. Staalmeester brushes make a noticeable difference, giving me smooth application with Mineral Paint. Here's a guide on how to choose the right brush

3. Forgetting to Seal a High-Traffic Piece

Early on, I refinished a coffee table in Mineral Paint and absolutely loved the smooth, matte look. Feeling confident, I skipped adding a topcoat, thinking the raw finish would hold up. It didn’t take long before everyday use led to stains and marks—ruining all my hard work.

What I Learned: Always choose a protective finish tailored to the project’s purpose. Now, high-traffic pieces get a durable coat of Fusion’s Tough Coat or Ultra Glide. For pieces needing a softer touch, I choose wax or hemp oil to maintain their beautiful texture.
